Cory Montheith

Cory Montheith is an actor and singer. He was born in May 11, 1983 in Calgary Alberta. Cory Montheith’s acting career began in Vancouver, British Columbia but Cory Montheith was rasied in Victoria, British Columbia. Cory Montheith used to work as a Wal-Mart people greeter, taxicab driver, school bus driver and a roofer. When Cory Montheith was in the ninth grade he dropped out of school and he never attended high school. Cory Montheith is recently in a movie called Monte Carlo with Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy. In 2009, Montheith was cast in the Fox series Glee, playing Finn Hudson, the male lead of the glee club and the quarterback of Mckinley High School. The first time he sang in front of an audience was at his in person audition at which he sang “Honesty”, by Billy Joel. Cory Montheith and Lea Michele, his Glee co-star, were included in Entertainment Weekly’s 2009 “Summer Must List” being named “Summer Must Songbird” for the portrayals of Finn and Rachel on Glee respectively. In 2007 Cory Montheith starred in MTV series Kaya.

Her parents separated when she was two, and so Eilleen moved to the mining town of Timmins, Ontario, with her older sister Jill and her mother Sharon. Three years later her mother married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa logger. Eillen loved music from the start. When she was three years old she was in a diner, singing along with the jukebox. Someone asked if she could sing louder. When Eileen Twain grew up she adopted the stage name: Shania. Shania Twain married a man named Robert John “Mut” Lange , one of the most successful producers in the world. They met in 1993 in Nashville, fell in love and married that December in Huntsville.

Mike Myers was known for acting in movies. Mike Myers was born in Scarborough, Ontario on the twenty-fifth of May, 1963. He made a television commercial in British Columbia for hydro-electric when he was eight years old. In 1989, his dream came true when he joined Saturday Night Live and he stayed there until 1994. Mike Myers won an award in June, 2001. He was awarded for wall of fame in Toronto. Mike Myers plays the voice of the ogre on “Shrek”. He acted in “Austin Powers” and he also acted in “Wayne’s World”. Mike Myers has a street named after him, named Mike Myers Drive. Mike Myers is a good actor.

Clara Hughes was born September 27, 1976. She was born in Winnipeg Manitoba. Clara currently lives in Glen Sutton Quebec. Clara is the only Canadian and 4th athlete in history to be in the summer and winter Olympics. She is a cyclist and speed skater. She has won 2 bronze summer Olympics medals 1 bronze medal at the winter Olympics and many more. She has also won things out side of sports such as the Order of Canada, the Order of Manitoba, an Honorary Doctor of Law and the sports and community awards. Clara Hughes has said she will be retiring from the Olympic Games. After learning all of these interesting things about her, I am sad that I will not see her compete again.

William Lyon Mackenzie King was born in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario, December 17, 1874 and died in Kingsmere, Quebec on July 22, 1950. He was the youngest serving Prime Minister in Canada. He created the old age pension in 1926 and unemployment insurance in 1940. He also created family allowances in 1944.

Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh Scotland. Alexander Graham Bell created the bell telephone. At the age of 14, he and his brother could make a dog growl sound like words. The bell company was made in 1877. Alexander Graham Bell’s grandfather was a part time actor in London, England. His father taught deaf children how to speak. Alexander Graham Bell was not born in Canada but many of his greatest scientific discoveries were made on Canadian soil. Alexander Graham Bell died on August 2, 1922.

Wayne Gretzky was born January 26th, 1961. He was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and a lot of people say that he is the BEST hockey player that ever set foot on the ice and I am one of them. He was born in, Brantford, Ontario, Canada. He was also known as “The Great One”.

Wayne Gretzky was a managing partner of the Phoenix Coyotes National Hockey League team and he had a remarkable career in children’s leagues in Ontario. When he was 6 years old, his father, Walter, built a rink in the family’s backyard, and it was there, that Wayne skated for hours on end, every day, practicing his skating, shooting, and stick handling and learning everything about the game from his dad. “It was for self- preservation”. Walter admitted that he got sick of taking Wayne to the park and sitting there for hours freezing to death. From the time he was 6, he played on many leagues above his age. Also Wayne Gretzky has a wife named Janet and they have 5 kids, 2 girls and 3 boys. The girls are, Paulina and Emma, and the boys are, Ty, Trevor, and Tristan. I call Wayne Gretzky, “The Great Gretzky”.

Steve Nash, born February 7, 1974, is a Canadian professional basket ball player who plays point guard for the Phoenix Sun of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nash, who was born in South Africa but grew up in Canada, enjoyed a successful high-school basket ball career, and he was eventually given a scholar ship by Santa Clara University. In his four seasons with the Broncos the team made three NCAA tournament appearances and Nash was twice named the west coast conference player of the year.

E. Pauline Johnson

E. Pauline Johnson was born March 10, 1861 and died in 1913. Pauline had an English mother and a Mohawk Native-Canadian father Emily used the Mohawk name Tekahionwake. At the age of 31, when her society expected her to marry and have children, she began on tour the country where she gave popular recitals of her poetry, comedy routines, and plays from Halifax to Vancouver. Pauline was the first native poet to have her work published in Canada. Pauline’s famous poem was “The Song my Paddle Sings’’. There is a school named after Pauline Johnson and I go to that school.

Biography Expectations

Grade 4 students are expected to research and write a biography about a Canadian of their choice. The hope is students will try to choose someone no one else has chosen, but this may not always be the case.

Once these biographies have been written and edited in rough, they will be typed into Word and posted on our "Grade 4 Biography Blog"

After the student has posted a blog entry he/she will then find a biography of someone who is from another country to compare similarities and differences.
